About this worksheet

Each question shows two groups of pictures with a plus sign between them and three empty boxes below. The child writes how many are in each group, then the total, making an equation like 3 + 4 = 7. Sums stay within 10.

Turning a picture into an equation is the reverse of the earlier picture sheets: the child decides which numbers go in. It is the same step they will take later with word problems.

A worked example

3 butterflies + 4 butterflies, then ___ + ___ = ___

  1. Count the first group: 3. Write 3 in the first box.
  2. Count the second group: 4. Write 4 in the second box.
  3. Count all the butterflies together: 7.
  4. Write 7 in the last box.

Answer: 3 + 4 = 7

The common mistake

What it looks like: Putting the total in the first box, or writing the two groups in the wrong boxes.

Why it happens: Three boxes in a row look alike, and a child may count everything first and write it in the first box they see.

How to fix it: Work left to right: the first group goes in the first box, the second group in the box after the plus sign, and the total after the = sign.
