About this worksheet
Each equation gives the first number and the total, and the box in the middle is the part to find. A child starts at the first number and counts up to the total; how many counts it takes is the missing number.
This is the first taste of the link between adding and subtracting: 2 + ? = 9 asks the same thing as 9 - 2. Counting up from a number, instead of from one, is also the habit that makes later addition quick.
A worked example
3 + ? = 7
- Start at the first number: 3.
- Count up to the total, raising a finger for each count: 4, 5, 6, 7.
- Four fingers are up, so it took 4 counts.
- Write 4 in the box. Check: 3 + 4 = 7.
Answer: 3 + 4 = 7
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the total, or adding the two numbers shown: 3 + 7 = 10 for the example.
Why it happens: Most addition a child has seen puts the answer after the equal sign, so a box in the middle looks like a place to add.
How to fix it: Read it aloud as a question: "3 and how many more make 7?" Then count up from 3 and stop at 7.
