About this worksheet

Stacked addition puts one number above the other with the plus sign on the left and a line underneath. The sum is written below the line. Every sum on this sheet is 10 or less.

The facts are the same as on a line; only the layout changes. Seeing a fact both ways now makes the column format feel familiar long before a child adds bigger numbers in columns.

A worked example

3 + 4, stacked

  1. Read the top number: 3.
  2. Read the number with the plus sign: 4.
  3. Start at 4 and count on 3: 5, 6, 7.
  4. Write 7 under the line, straight below the other numbers.

Answer: 7

The common mistake

What it looks like: Copying one of the numbers under the line, or subtracting when the numbers are stacked.

Why it happens: A child who has seen stacked subtraction may not look at the sign on the left.

How to fix it: Before solving, touch the sign and say it: "plus, so the answer gets bigger."
