About this worksheet
Each problem has its own number line from 0 to 10. A child puts a finger on the first number and draws one hop back for each number being taken away. Where the last hop lands is the answer.
Counting back on a number line shows subtraction as moving down the numbers, which is how a child will picture it in their head later. It also helps with facts like 6 - 0, where there are no hops at all.
A worked example
5 - 2 = ?
- Find 5 on the number line.
- Draw one hop back to 4. That is 1.
- Draw another hop back to 3. That is 2.
- You landed on 3. Write 3 in the box.
Answer: 5 - 2 = 3
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting the starting number as the first hop, which lands one too high: 4 for 5 - 2.
Why it happens: The child says "1" while touching 5 instead of after leaving it.
How to fix it: Count the hops, not the numbers: the first "1" is said in the air between 5 and 4.
