About this worksheet

Each picture shows a group with some objects crossed out. The child writes three numbers: how many in all, how many crossed out, and how many are left, as in 5 - 2 = 3.

Here the child builds the equation instead of reading one. Turning a picture into numbers is the same thinking a word problem asks for later, so it is worth doing slowly.

A worked example

5 butterflies, 2 crossed out: ? - ? = ?

  1. Count all the butterflies, crossed out or not: 5. Write 5 in the first box.
  2. Count the crossed-out butterflies: 2. Write 2 in the second box.
  3. Count the butterflies that are left: 3. Write 3 in the last box.

Answer: 5 - 2 = 3

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing how many are left in the first box, as in 3 - 2 = 1.

Why it happens: The child counts the pictures that stand out as plain and skips the crossed-out ones for the first number.

How to fix it: For the first box, touch every picture, even the ones with an X. The first number is always the whole group.
