About this worksheet

Stacked subtraction puts the starting number on top and the number taken away below it, beside the minus sign. The answer goes under the line. Every number on this sheet is 10 or less.

The facts match the ones written on a line; only the layout changes. Seeing them stacked now makes columns familiar before a child subtracts bigger numbers that way.

A worked example

5 - 2, stacked

  1. Read the top number: 5.
  2. Read the number with the minus sign: 2.
  3. Count back 2 from 5: 4, 3.
  4. Write 3 under the line.

Answer: 3

The common mistake

What it looks like: Adding instead of subtracting: 7 for 5 over - 2.

Why it happens: In a column the sign sits off to the left, and a child who has just done stacked addition may not look at it.

How to fix it: Read it from the top down with the sign: "5 take away 2." The top number is always where you start.
