About this worksheet

Each of the 12 questions is a short run of counting numbers up to 20 with a blank at the end. The child reads the run and writes the number that comes next, which is always one more than the last number shown.

Knowing what comes next without starting from 1 is what lets a child count on when adding. Runs that cross from 9 to 10, or from 19 to 20, are where children most often get stuck.

A worked example

7, 8, 9, ____

  1. Read the numbers aloud: 7, 8, 9.
  2. Each number is one more than the one before.
  3. Say the next counting number after 9: 10.
  4. Write 10 on the blank line.

Answer: 7, 8, 9, 10

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing a number that looks right but skips one, like 11 after 9, or writing 20 as "02".

Why it happens: Moving into a new ten is the hardest step in counting, and children often reverse the digits of a number they hear.

How to fix it: Count the run aloud and keep going one more. For teens and 20, say the number and then say which digit comes first.
