About this worksheet

Each problem names a teen number by its parts: 1 ten and some ones, from 1 to 9. The child puts them together and writes the number, from 11 to 19.

This uses only words and numbers, with no blocks to count. A child who knows that 1 ten + 6 ones is 16 has the idea of place value that every bigger number builds on.

A worked example

1 ten + 6 ones = ?

  1. 1 ten is 10.
  2. Count on 6 ones from 10: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.
  3. Write 16 in the box: a 1 for the ten, then a 6 for the ones.

Answer: 1 ten + 6 ones = 16

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 7, from adding 1 + 6, or writing 61.

Why it happens: The child adds the two digits shown, or writes the ones first because "sixteen" says six first.

How to fix it: Say "1 ten is 10" first, then count on the ones. Write the ten's 1 first, then the ones.
