About this worksheet

Each question names a number of tens and a number of ones, like 5 tens + 7 ones, and the child writes the number, 57. The page mixes numbers from single digits up to the 90s, including ones with 0 tens.

This is place value read in words: the tens become the first digit and the ones the second. Saying it both ways helps a child see that 57 is fifty and seven, which later makes adding and comparing two-digit numbers make sense.

A worked example

4 tens + 3 ones = ☐

  1. 4 tens is 40.
  2. 3 ones is 3.
  3. 40 and 3 more is 43.
  4. Write 43 in the box.

Answer: 43

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 0 tens + 9 ones as 09, or 1 ten + 0 ones as 1.

Why it happens: A zero in the question makes the child unsure whether to write it.

How to fix it: Read the answer back as a number: "one ten and no ones is ten," so it is 10. With 0 tens there is nothing in the tens place, so 0 tens + 9 ones is just 9.
