About this worksheet
Each picture shows rods of ten and single cubes, and each question asks for one of them: "Tens:" or "Ones:". The child counts only the blocks in that place and writes the count, not the whole number.
Pulling one place out of a number is how children learn that the tens digit and the ones digit count different things. It also builds the habit of reading a question for what it asks before answering.
A worked example
5 rods and 3 cubes. Tens: ☐
- Read the label: it asks for tens.
- Count the rods: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
- Ignore the cubes for this one.
- Write 5 in the box.
Answer: Tens: 5
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the whole number, 53, when the question asks only for the tens.
Why it happens: The child counts everything in the picture out of habit and skips past the label.
How to fix it: Read the label together first and point to the matching side of the picture. For "Tens", count rods only; for "Ones", count cubes only. A tens side with no rods is 0.
