About this worksheet
Each question shows a group of hearts, stars, triangles, balloons or squares, from about 5 up to about 40. The child touches each one, says one number for each, and writes the last number said.
The shapes are set out in rows of five and ten, so a child can count all the way or begin to count a full row as ten. Keeping track past 20 is the real practice here, since the numbers in the 20s, 30s and 40s follow a pattern children are still learning.
A worked example
Two full rows of 10 stars and 3 more
- Touch each star in the first row, counting 1 to 10.
- Keep going along the second row: 11 to 20.
- Count the last three: 21, 22, 23.
- Write 23 in the box.
Answer: 23
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting a shape twice or skipping one, especially when moving to a new row.
Why it happens: In a big group the finger and the voice drift apart, and the jump to a new row is where they lose their place.
How to fix it: Count one row at a time with a finger on each shape, and say each number as the finger lands. At the end of a full row of ten, pause and say the total so far before starting the next.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
