About this worksheet
Each question asks for a number of dots, from small numbers up into the 30s, with as many ten-frames as it needs. The child fills one frame completely, ten dots, before moving on to the next.
Filling frames in order turns a big number into tens and ones the child can see: 34 dots is three full frames and four more. That picture is the start of place value, and it makes large counts easier to check.
A worked example
Draw 23 dots.
- Fill the first ten-frame, one dot per box: 1 to 10.
- Fill the second frame: 11 to 20.
- Move to the third frame and draw 3 more: 21, 22, 23. Stop.
- Check: two full frames and 3 more is 23.
Answer: Two full ten-frames and 3 dots in the third.
The common mistake
What it looks like: Spreading dots across several frames at once, or leaving gaps, so the count is hard to check.
Why it happens: The child sees the empty boxes and draws wherever there is room.
How to fix it: Fill the top row of a frame, then the bottom row, and only then move to the next frame. Count full frames by tens to check: 10, 20, then the extra dots.
