About this worksheet

Each question asks for a number of dots, such as 18, 24 or 34, with two to four ten-frames to fill. The child fills one frame with ten dots before moving to the next.

Drawing a big number as full tens and a few ones shows what the digits mean: 26 is two full frames and 6 more. It also gives a child a way to check a large count without starting over.

A worked example

Draw 26 dots.

  1. Fill the first ten-frame: 1 to 10.
  2. Fill the second ten-frame: 11 to 20.
  3. In the third frame, draw 6 more: 21 to 26. Stop.
  4. Check: 10, 20, and 6 more is 26.

Answer: Two full ten-frames and 6 dots in the third.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Starting the next frame before the first one is full, or drawing one dot too many.

Why it happens: With many boxes on the page it is easy to lose the place, and a child may keep drawing past the number.

How to fix it: Say each number as the pencil touches a box, and finish a whole frame before moving on. When the frames are done, count them by tens and the extra dots by ones to check.
