About this worksheet
Each of the 12 questions is a short run of counting numbers, like 67, 68, 69, ____, and the child writes the next one. The numbers range across 1 to 100.
Counting on from any number, without starting at 1, is how children later add in their heads. Runs that cross a ten, like 89 to 90, practice the step to a new ten, which is the part of counting to 100 that takes the most practice.
A worked example
67, 68, 69, ____
- Read the numbers already there: 67, 68, 69.
- Each number goes up by one.
- After 69 the ones start over at 0 and the tens go up: 70.
- Write 70 on the line.
Answer: 67, 68, 69, 70
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing 610 or 60 after 69.
Why it happens: The child knows the next ones digit after 9 is "ten" but not that it starts a new ten.
How to fix it: Count by tens to 100 together, then practice just the turns: "69, 70; 79, 80; 89, 90." After a 9, the tens go up by one and the ones go back to 0.
