About this worksheet

Each of the 12 questions is a short run of counting numbers, like 27, 28, 29, ____, and the child writes the next one. All the numbers stay within 50.

Knowing the next number without starting over from 1 is called counting on, and it is what children later use to add. The runs that cross a ten, like 38, 39, ____, are the ones to watch: they practice the switch to a new ten.

A worked example

27, 28, 29, ____

  1. Read the numbers already there: 27, 28, 29.
  2. Each number goes up by one.
  3. One more than 29 is 30, the start of a new ten.
  4. Write 30 on the line.

Answer: 27, 28, 29, 30

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 20 or 210 after 29.

Why it happens: The child knows the ones go up by one but is unsure what happens after 9, so the tens digit stays the same or 10 gets stuck on the end.

How to fix it: Count by tens together (10, 20, 30, 40, 50), then practice the turns: "29, then 30; 39, then 40." After a 9, the tens go up by one and the ones start again at 0.
