About this worksheet

Each question shows a group of hearts, stars, triangles, circles or balloons, from about 15 to the 70s. The shapes are set out in rows of ten with a small gap after every five.

Counts this big are where children start to see the value of grouping. Counting a full row as ten and then counting on is faster and easier to check than counting every shape from one.

A worked example

Four full rows of 10 circles and 6 more

  1. Count each full row by tens: 10, 20, 30, 40.
  2. Count on the leftover circles: 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46.
  3. Check that every shape was counted once.
  4. Write 46 in the box.

Answer: 46

The common mistake

What it looks like: Losing count partway through a long group and guessing the total.

Why it happens: Counting fifty or more shapes one at a time is a lot to hold, and one slip throws off everything after it.

How to fix it: Check that each full row has ten, then count the full rows by tens and count on the rest by ones. If they lose their place, they only need to recount one row.
