About this worksheet
There are 36 numbers on this page, from 11 to 99. For each one the child circles the ones digit and writes it in the box: 43 has 3 ones, and 70 has 0 ones.
The ones digit is the one that changes every time you count up by one, and it is where adding and subtracting start. Spotting it quickly makes column math and counting on much easier later.
A worked example
58 ☐
- Look at the number: 58.
- Circle the right digit. It is in the ones place: 8.
- Check: 58 is fifty and eight, so there are 8 ones.
- Write 8 in the box.
Answer: 8
The common mistake
What it looks like: Leaving the box empty for a number like 70 or 40.
Why it happens: The child sees no ones and thinks there is nothing to write.
How to fix it: Explain that zero is an answer: 70 is seven tens and no ones, so write 0 in the box.
