About this worksheet
A place-value chart has a Tens column and an Ones column with one digit in each. The child reads the two digits and writes the number they make, from the teens up to the 90s.
The chart shows that the left digit counts tens and the right digit counts ones. That layout is the same one children use later for adding and subtracting in columns.
A worked example
Tens: 6, Ones: 2
- Read the Tens column: 6 tens is 60.
- Read the Ones column: 2 ones is 2.
- Put them together: 60 and 2 is 62.
- Write 62 in the box.
Answer: 62
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the digits in the wrong order, so Tens 3, Ones 7 becomes 73.
Why it happens: Some children write the number they read last first, or start from the side nearest the box.
How to fix it: Have them say the tens out loud first ("thirty") and then the ones ("seven"), and write the digits in the order they say them.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
