About this worksheet
Each tall rod is a stack of ten cubes, and each small cube is one. A child counts the rods, counts the cubes, and puts the two together into one two-digit number, up to the 70s on this page.
Writing tens and ones in separate boxes first shows where each digit comes from. Seven rods and four cubes is 74 because the 7 means seven tens, which is the idea all later place value builds on.
A worked example
3 rods and 4 cubes
- Count the rods: 1, 2, 3. Write 3 in the tens box.
- Count the cubes: 1, 2, 3, 4. Write 4 in the ones box.
- Count the rods by tens, then keep going with the cubes: 10, 20, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34.
- Write 34 in the big box.
Answer: 3 tens, 4 ones, 34
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting each rod as one, so 3 rods and 4 cubes becomes 7.
Why it happens: The rods and cubes are both blocks, and a child's habit is to count every block the same way.
How to fix it: Before counting, have them touch one rod and say "ten". Count rods by tens out loud (10, 20, 30) and only switch to ones at the cubes. A picture with no rods means 0 tens.
