About this worksheet
Each line gives a number in tens and ones, like 6 tens 7 ones, and the child writes the number it makes, 67. One line may show only tens, such as 8 tens, which is 80.
Working out what each part is worth and then adding them is the first step toward expanded form: 67 is 60 + 7. That idea carries straight into adding two-digit numbers later.
A worked example
5 tens 2 ones = ____
- Work out what each part is worth: 5 tens is 50, and 2 ones is 2.
- Add those values together: 50 + 2 = 52.
- Write 52 in the box.
Answer: 5 tens 2 ones = 52
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing 8 tens as 8.
Why it happens: With no ones to add, the child writes the tens digit alone and forgets the zero that holds the ones place.
How to fix it: Count by tens on fingers: 10, 20, 30, up to 80. Eight tens is eighty, and eighty is written 80, with a 0 in the ones place.
