About this worksheet
There are 36 numbers on this page, from the teens to the 90s. For each one the child circles the tens digit and writes it in the box: 74 has 7 tens, 40 has 4 tens.
Knowing which digit counts tens is the base of comparing numbers, rounding and adding in columns. Doing it many times in a row makes it quick, so a child stops having to think about which side is which.
A worked example
63 ☐
- Look at the number: 63.
- Circle the left digit. It is in the tens place: 6.
- Check: 63 is sixty and three, and sixty is 6 tens.
- Write 6 in the box.
Answer: 6
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the ones digit, 3, for 63.
Why it happens: The child grabs the digit nearest the box, which is the ones digit.
How to fix it: Say the number aloud: "sixty-three." The part you say first, sixty, is the tens. Sixty is 6 tens, so write 6.
