About this worksheet

Each problem asks for a number from 11 to 20, mixed up, and gives two ten-frames to draw that many dots in, one dot per box. The child fills the first frame of ten, then starts the second.

Filling a whole frame and going on to the next shows a child that 12 is "ten and two more." That picture of the teen numbers is the start of place value.

A worked example

Draw 12 dots.

  1. Start in the top-left box of the first frame.
  2. Fill the top row, then the bottom row, counting 1 to 10. The first frame is full.
  3. Move to the second frame and keep counting: 11, 12. Stop.
  4. Check: one full frame and two more is 12.

Answer: One full ten-frame and 2 dots in the second frame.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Starting the second frame before the first is full, or spreading the shapes across both frames.

Why it happens: Two frames side by side look like one long row, and children fill whichever box is nearest.

How to fix it: Fill the first frame completely and say "ten." Only then move to the second frame for the extra ones.
