About this worksheet

Each problem shows the starting number as a row of sticks. A child crosses out as many sticks as the number being taken away, then counts the sticks left.

Crossing out sticks is a quick picture a child can draw anywhere, even in the margin of homework later. It keeps subtraction tied to something real while the facts are still new.

A worked example

5 - 2 = ?

  1. Count the sticks shown: 5.
  2. Cross out 2 sticks from the end.
  3. Count the sticks left: 1, 2, 3.
  4. Write 3 in the box.

Answer: 5 - 2 = 3

The common mistake

What it looks like: Drawing new sticks for the number being taken away instead of crossing out.

Why it happens: Drawing more sticks is how the addition version of this sheet works, and the habit carries over.

How to fix it: Read the sign first. A minus means the sticks are already there, and some go away.
