About this worksheet
Each ten-frame shows the starting number as counters, filling the top row of five first. A child crosses out the number being taken away and counts what is left.
Because the frame is built from rows of five, a child starts to see 9 - 7 as a short count instead of a long one. Seeing the empty boxes and the full row also builds the number sense that makes subtraction facts quick later.
A worked example
5 - 2 = ?
- Count the counters: a full top row of 5.
- Cross out 2 counters, starting from the last one.
- Count the counters left: 1, 2, 3.
- Write 3 in the box.
Answer: 5 - 2 = 3
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting the empty boxes as well as the crossed-out counters, so the answer is too big.
Why it happens: Crossed-out counters and empty boxes both look "not there", and children mix them up.
How to fix it: Touch only the counters with no X on them, and say a number for each one.
