About this worksheet

These are addition facts written the way a sentence reads, left to right, with a box after the equal sign for the answer. Every sum on the sheet is 10 or less, and some include adding 0.

With no pictures on the page, a child works from the numbers alone: holding the first number in mind and counting on, or simply knowing the fact. That is the step from counting objects toward remembering facts.

A worked example

3 + 4 =

  1. Say the bigger number first: 4.
  2. Count on 3 more, one finger at a time: 5, 6, 7.
  3. Write 7 in the box.

Answer: 3 + 4 = 7

The common mistake

What it looks like: Answering one too few when counting on, like 6 for 3 + 4.

Why it happens: The child says the starting number again as the first count: "4, 5, 6."

How to fix it: Say the starting number with your hands still. Raise the first finger on the next number: "four... five, six, seven."

Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
