About this worksheet
Each problem shows the first number as a row of sticks. A child draws the second number as more sticks beside them, then counts all of them to find the total.
Drawing the second number turns an equation into something the child can see and touch. Once the picture and the numbers match, a child can start counting on from the first number instead of counting every stick.
A worked example
3 + 4 = ?
- Look at the sticks shown: there are 3.
- Draw 4 more sticks next to them, counting as you draw: 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Count all the sticks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
- Write 7 in the box.
Answer: 3 + 4 = 7
The common mistake
What it looks like: Drawing the total as new sticks, or drawing the first number again, so the count comes out too big.
Why it happens: A child sees two numbers and draws both of them, missing that the first number is already drawn.
How to fix it: Point to the sticks shown and say the first number. Then draw only the number after the plus sign.
