About this worksheet
Each problem shows the starting number as a row of pictures: butterflies, apples, cars and more. A child crosses out as many as the number being taken away, then counts the ones still standing.
Crossing out makes "take away" something a child does with a pencil. It also shows why 6 - 0 is 6: nothing gets crossed out.
A worked example
5 - 2 = ?
- Count the pictures: 5 butterflies.
- Cross out 2 of them, counting as you go: 1, 2.
- Count the butterflies that are not crossed out: 1, 2, 3.
- Write 3 in the box.
Answer: 5 - 2 = 3
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing how many were crossed out, or counting every picture including the crossed-out ones.
Why it happens: After crossing out, the child keeps counting from where they stopped and loses track of which pictures are gone.
How to fix it: Cross out from the end of the row, so the pictures left are together at the start. Then count only those.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
