About this worksheet

The rainbow is a number line from 0 to 10 with arcs joining partners that add to 10: 0 and 10, 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and 5 with itself. The sheet goes through every pair, so a child sees all eleven ways to make 10.

Knowing the pairs that make 10 by heart is one of the most useful facts in early math. Later, 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3, and 13 - 4 becomes 13 - 3 - 1, both built on these pairs.

A worked example

3 + ? = 10

  1. Find 3 on the rainbow.
  2. Follow its arc to the other end: it lands on 7.
  3. Write 7 in the box.
  4. Check by counting up from 3 to 10: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 is seven counts.

Answer: 3 + 7 = 10

The common mistake

What it looks like: Following the wrong arc and landing one number off, writing 6 or 8 for 3 + ? = 10.

Why it happens: The arcs sit close together near the middle, and a small finger can slip to the neighboring color.

How to fix it: Trace the arc with a finger from end to end, then check that the two numbers really add to 10 by counting up.
