About this worksheet

Each question is an addition fact within 10, like 6 + 1, with a stack of cubes for each number. The child counts both stacks and writes how many cubes there are in all.

Stacks show a sum as one tower getting taller. Some questions add 0, shown as an empty square, which helps a child see that adding nothing changes nothing.

A worked example

3 + 4 = ?

  1. Count the cubes in the first stack: 3.
  2. Count the cubes in the second stack: 4.
  3. Count on from 3 for the second stack: 4, 5, 6, 7.
  4. Write 7 in the box.

Answer: 3 + 4 = 7

The common mistake

What it looks like: Losing count partway up a tall stack, such as the 7 in 2 + 7 or the 10 in 10 + 0.

Why it happens: The cubes in a tall stack are small and close together, so it is easy to count one twice or skip one.

How to fix it: Touch each cube with the pencil tip as you count, bottom to top. The number printed above the stack is there to check the count against.
