About this worksheet
Each question is an addition fact within 10, like 2 + 7, with a group of pictures under each number. The child counts each group, then counts all the pictures together and writes the total.
Seeing the pictures beside the numbers shows what a sum means: two groups put together. Some questions add 0, shown as an empty box, so a child sees that adding nothing leaves the number the same.
A worked example
3 + 4 = ?
- Count the first group: 3 butterflies.
- Count the second group: 4 butterflies.
- Count all of them together: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
- Write 7 in the box.
Answer: 3 + 4 = 7
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the number of pictures in only one group, such as 7 for 2 + 7.
Why it happens: After counting the second group carefully, a child can forget that the first group still needs to be added.
How to fix it: Count every picture in both groups with one finger, starting from the first group. Once that is easy, try counting on from the first number instead.
