About this worksheet

Each question shows two ten-frames with up to 10 dots in each and a box between them. The child counts the dots and writes > if the left frame has more, < if it has less, and = if they match.

A ten-frame shows a number's size at a glance: a full top row is 5, and two full rows are 10. Comparing frames helps a child see that 7 is "5 and 2", which is less than 8, "5 and 3".

A worked example

3 dots ___ 5 dots

  1. Count the left frame: 3 dots.
  2. Count the right frame: a full top row, 5 dots.
  3. 3 is less than 5.
  4. The point faces the smaller number, so write < in the box.

Answer: 3 < 5

The common mistake

What it looks like: Comparing how many empty boxes there are instead of how many dots.

Why it happens: The empty boxes stand out on the page, and a child can count them by mistake.

How to fix it: Count only the dots. Start with the top row, and if it is full, say 5 and count on along the bottom.
