About this worksheet
Each question shows two boxes, A and B, with up to 10 apples, ten-frame dots or stacking cubes in each. The child counts both and checks the box above the one with less. Some boxes are empty, which is zero.
Children usually learn "more" first. Looking for the smaller group makes them think about the comparison the other way around, which helps later with taking away.
A worked example
A has 10 cubes. B has 1 cube. Which has less?
- Count the cubes in A: 10.
- Count the cubes in B: 1.
- 1 comes before 10 when you count, so 1 is less.
- Put a check in the box by B.
Answer: B
The common mistake
What it looks like: Checking the group with more, out of habit.
Why it happens: "Which has more?" is the question children hear most, so they answer it even when the page asks for less.
How to fix it: Before each question, say "less" out loud together. After counting, point to the smaller number and check that box.
