About this worksheet
Each question gives one starting number between 8 and 17. The child says it out loud, then counts on and writes the next three numbers in the blanks, crossing 10 on some.
The teen numbers are where counting gets tricky: their names don't sound like the numbers they are written as. Counting on through them, and writing each one, makes the order of 11 to 20 feel familiar.
A worked example
12, ____, ____, ____
- Say the first number out loud: 12.
- Count on one number at a time: 13, 14, 15.
- Write 13, 14 and 15 in the blanks.
Answer: 12, 13, 14, 15
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing teen numbers backward, like 31 for 13 or 61 for 16.
Why it happens: We say "thir-teen" with the 3 first, so a child writes the 3 first.
How to fix it: Point out that every teen number starts with a 1, for the ten. Write the 1 first, then the number you hear.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
