About this worksheet
Each of the 12 questions is a few numbers in counting order, like 7, 8, 9, with a blank line at the end. The child writes the number that comes right after, one more than the last number shown.
Knowing the next number without counting up from 1 is a big step in kindergarten. It is the same thinking a child uses later to add 1 to any number.
A worked example
7, 8, 9, ____
- Read the numbers out loud: 7, 8, 9.
- Each number is one more than the one before it.
- Say the next number in counting order: 10.
- Write 10 on the line.
Answer: 7, 8, 9, 10
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting from 1 every time to find the next number, and sometimes losing track on the way.
Why it happens: Many children know the counting song from 1 but have not yet practiced starting from the middle of it.
How to fix it: Point to the last number and say it, then just say the next one. Practicing out loud in the car or at dinner ("What comes after 6?") helps.
