About this worksheet
A ten-frame is two rows of five boxes. Here each frame already has some dots, and the child adds more until there are as many as the number above it, from 2 up to 10.
To do that, a child counts the dots already there and keeps counting from that number. Counting on from a group, instead of starting again at one, is the first step toward adding.
A worked example
Make 6. The frame shows 4 dots.
- Count the dots already there: 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Keep counting as you draw in the next empty box: 5.
- Draw one more dot, starting the bottom row: 6. Stop.
- Check: count every dot. There are 6.
Answer: 2 dots drawn, making 6 in all.
The common mistake
What it looks like: Drawing as many dots as the number says, so "Make 6" with 4 dots already there ends with 10.
Why it happens: The child reads the number and draws it without noticing the dots that are already in the frame.
How to fix it: Count the dots on the page out loud first, then say the next number as each new dot goes in. Stop drawing when you say the number at the top.
