About this worksheet

Every number on the page has a green start dot and arrows that show which way the pencil goes. Tracing along them builds the right movement before a child writes the number freehand on the lines beside it.

Writing numbers the same way each time makes them quicker and easier to read. That matters as soon as a child starts writing answers to counting and adding questions.

A worked example

Trace the 3, then write it on the lines.

  1. Put the pencil on the green dot at the top left of the 3.
  2. Follow the arrow around to make the top curve.
  3. Without lifting the pencil, curve around again to make the bottom.
  4. Write 3 on the lines, starting at the top each time.

Answer: A row of 3s, each started at the top.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Starting a number at the bottom, or drawing it in pieces, so 3s and 5s come out backward or wobbly.

Why it happens: Children copy the shape they see, and the shape alone doesn't show where to start.

How to fix it: Before each number, point to the green dot together and say where the pencil goes first. For 5, the down stroke and curve come first and the flat top goes on last.
