About this worksheet

Each row shows a group of circles, triangles, hearts or balloons. The child touches each one, says one number for each, and writes the last number said.

That last number tells how many are in the whole group. Understanding this is the core of counting, and it is what every adding and comparing sheet after this one depends on.

A worked example

A row of 3 stars, with an empty box beside it.

  1. Touch the first star and say 1.
  2. Move to the next star and say 2.
  3. Move to the last star and say 3.
  4. The last number said is how many. Write 3 in the box.

Answer: 3

The common mistake

What it looks like: Counting a shape twice or skipping one, especially in long rows like 9 hearts or 10 triangles.

Why it happens: In a long row the eyes and the voice drift apart, and the finger loses its place.

How to fix it: One touch, one number. Count left to right, and for long rows cover each shape with a finger or a small coin as it is counted.
