About this worksheet

Each question gives one starting number, from 1 to 7. The child says it out loud, then counts on and writes the next three numbers in the blanks.

Starting the count from any number, instead of always from 1, is called counting on. It is the skill that makes adding small numbers quick.

A worked example

4, ____, ____, ____

  1. Say the first number out loud: 4.
  2. Count on one number at a time: 5, 6, 7.
  3. Write 5, 6 and 7 in the blanks.

Answer: 4, 5, 6, 7

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing the starting number again in the first blank: 4, 4, 5, 6.

Why it happens: The child says the starting number while writing, and it lands on the first line.

How to fix it: Say the first number with the pencil still, then say the next number as the pencil touches the first blank.
