About this worksheet

Each question shows two boxes, A and B, with up to 10 apples, ten-frame dots or stacking cubes in each. The child counts both and checks the box above the one with more. Some boxes are empty, which is zero.

Comparing two groups by counting them is how a child learns that a bigger number means more things. That idea sits under every comparing and adding sheet that follows.

A worked example

A has 7 dots. B has 8 dots. Which has more?

  1. Count the dots in A: 7.
  2. Count the dots in B: 8.
  3. 8 comes after 7 when you count, so 8 is more.
  4. Put a check in the box by B.

Answer: B

The common mistake

What it looks like: Choosing the group that looks bigger, such as a tall stack of cubes or apples spread out wide, without counting.

Why it happens: Young children judge "more" by how much space a group takes up.

How to fix it: Count both groups and write the number under each one before choosing. The bigger number wins, however the groups are spread out.
