About this worksheet

Each question shows two numbers, from 1 to 16 on this page, with a box between them. The child writes > if the first number is more, < if it is less, and = if they are the same.

These symbols are how math writes "more than", "less than" and "equal to". Using them with plain numbers comes after comparing groups of things, and it is the same skill a child will use with bigger numbers all through school.

A worked example

8 ___ 16

  1. Read both numbers: 8 and 16.
  2. 16 comes after 8 when you count, so 8 is less than 16.
  3. The pointed end of the symbol faces the smaller number, 8.
  4. Write < in the box.

Answer: 8 < 16

The common mistake

What it looks like: Pointing the symbol the wrong way, writing 8 > 16 for "8 is less than 16".

Why it happens: > and < look alike, and a child who knows which number is bigger can still pick the wrong one.

How to fix it: The open side of the symbol faces the bigger number and the point faces the smaller one. Some children like to picture a hungry mouth that opens toward the bigger number.
