About this worksheet
Each question shows two boxes of stacking cubes with a box between them. The child counts the cubes on each side and writes > if the left side has more, < if it has less, and = if they match. A side may hold one stack, two stacks or none at all.
Stacks make size easy to see, but a side with two short stacks can have more than one tall one. Counting every cube teaches a child to trust the number over the shape.
A worked example
2 cubes ___ 4 cubes
- Count the cubes on the left: 2.
- Count the cubes on the right: 4.
- 2 is less than 4.
- The point faces the smaller number, so write < in the box.
Answer: 2 < 4
The common mistake
What it looks like: Comparing only the tallest stack and missing a second, shorter stack beside it.
Why it happens: The tall stack catches the eye, and the small one next to it looks like a separate thing.
How to fix it: Count every cube in the box, one stack at a time, and add them up before choosing a symbol.
