About this worksheet
Each question shows three numbers between 0 and 20, mixing single digits with teen numbers. The child circles the one that is largest.
Picking the largest of three means comparing more than one pair, which builds the number sense a child needs to put numbers in order.
A worked example
18 14 8
- Look at all three numbers: 18, 14 and 8.
- 8 has one digit, so it is smaller than the other two.
- 18 and 14 both start with 1. Compare the second digit: 8 is more than 4.
- Circle 18.
Answer: 18
The common mistake
What it looks like: Circling 8 over 14 or 18 because 8 is the biggest digit on the page.
Why it happens: The child compares the digits they see instead of the whole numbers.
How to fix it: Say each number out loud: eighteen, fourteen, eight. Teen numbers come after 10 when you count, so they are bigger than any one-digit number.
