About this worksheet
Each ten-frame shows an addition fact in two colors: the first number, then the second. Counting all the counters gives the total.
Seeing the full row of five, and how many boxes are still empty, helps a child move from counting every counter to just knowing facts like 4 + 3.
A worked example
4 + 3 = ?
- Look at the first color: 4 counters in the top row.
- Look at the second color: 3 more, one finishing the top row and two on the bottom.
- Count on from 4: 5, 6, 7.
- Write 7 in the box.
Answer: 4 + 3 = 7
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting on and saying the first number again: "4, 5, 6" for 4 + 3, which lands on 6.
Why it happens: The child touches the first new counter and says the starting number instead of the next one.
How to fix it: Say the first number with the hand still, then touch the first new counter and say the next number: "four… five, six, seven."
