About this worksheet
Each question is an addition fact within 10 written in a column, with butterflies beside each number to count. The child counts both rows of pictures and writes the total under the line.
Writing a sum in a column is how longer addition is set up in later grades. Meeting it here, with pictures to count, makes the layout familiar before the numbers get bigger.
A worked example
3 + 4
- Count the butterflies beside the 3: 3.
- Count the butterflies beside the 4: 4.
- Count them all together: 7.
- Write 7 in the box under the line.
Answer: 7
The common mistake
What it looks like: Reading the numbers across instead of down, or writing the bottom number as the answer.
Why it happens: The column layout is new, and the last number a child reads sits just above the box.
How to fix it: Run a finger down the column: top number, plus sign, bottom number, line. The answer goes under the line and counts both rows of pictures.
