About this worksheet

Each question shows three numbers between 0 and 20, mixing single digits with teen numbers. The child circles the one that is smallest.

Comparing three numbers at once means holding two comparisons in mind. It builds the number sense a child needs to put numbers in order.

A worked example

6 20 11

  1. Look at all three numbers: 6, 20 and 11.
  2. 6 has one digit. 20 and 11 have two digits, so they are bigger.
  3. 6 is the smallest.
  4. Circle 6.

Answer: 6

The common mistake

What it looks like: Circling a two-digit number because one of its digits is small, like picking 13 over 6 because of the 1.

Why it happens: A child who looks at one digit at a time may read 13 as "1 and 3" instead of thirteen.

How to fix it: Say each number out loud first. Any number with one digit is smaller than any teen number or 20.
