About this worksheet
Each question shows two groups of apples with a box between them. The child counts both groups and writes > if the left group has more, < if it has less, and = if they match. One group can be empty, which is zero.
Counting real things first gives the symbols a meaning. A child who has counted 3 apples against 5 knows why 3 < 5 is true.
A worked example
3 apples ___ 5 apples
- Count the left group: 3.
- Count the right group: 5.
- 3 is less than 5.
- The point faces the smaller group, so write < in the box.
Answer: 3 < 5
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing = when the groups look about the same size, like 6 and 6 or 6 and 7 spread over two rows.
Why it happens: When both groups fill two rows, a quick look makes them seem equal.
How to fix it: Count every group and write its number underneath before choosing a symbol. Only write = when the two numbers are exactly the same.
