About this worksheet

A number can be written as a word (seven) or as a numeral (7). This sheet asks a child to read the word and write the numeral that matches.

Children meet number words in stories, signs and math word problems. Linking each word to its numeral early means one less thing to stop and puzzle over later.

A worked example

eight = ?

  1. Say the word out loud: eight.
  2. Think of the numeral that word names: eight is 8.
  3. Write 8 in the box.

Answer: eight = 8

The common mistake

What it looks like: Mixing up words that start the same way, like six and seven, or two and ten.

Why it happens: A beginning reader often guesses from the first letter or two instead of reading the whole word.

How to fix it: Slide a finger under the whole word and say every sound before writing. If the word has an n at the end, it might be seven or ten; check the middle letters.

Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
