About this worksheet

Each problem shows a tower of cubes with some already crossed out. The child counts the cubes without an X, which is the answer to the subtraction beside it.

A tower is a picture of a number a child can measure with a finger. Comparing the full tower, the crossed-out part and what is left shows all three numbers in a subtraction fact at once.

A worked example

5 - 2 = ?

  1. Count all the cubes in the stack: 5.
  2. Find the crossed-out cubes: 2.
  3. Count the cubes with no X: 1, 2, 3.
  4. Write 3 in the box.

Answer: 5 - 2 = 3

The common mistake

What it looks like: Losing count partway up a tall stack and writing one more or one fewer.

Why it happens: The cubes are small and stacked close together, so it is easy to count one twice or skip one.

How to fix it: Start at the bottom and touch each cube with the pencil tip as you count, moving up one cube at a time.
