About this worksheet
Each row is a group of the same shape: stars, triangles, hearts, circles or squares. A child touches each one, says one number for each, and writes the last number said.
Past 10, counting gets harder because there are more things to keep track of and the teen numbers sound unlike the rest. A row that wraps onto a second line also checks that a child keeps the count going.
A worked example
Count the stars: ☆ ☆ ☆
- Put a finger on the first star and say 1.
- Hop to the next star and say 2.
- Hop to the last star and say 3.
- The last number said is how many. Write 3 in the box.
Answer: 3
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting one shape twice or skipping one in a long row, so the answer is off by one.
Why it happens: In a long row of identical shapes, it is easy to lose your place, especially when the row wraps to a new line.
How to fix it: Make a small dot on each shape with the pencil as you count it. Dotted shapes are done.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
