About this worksheet
Every clock on this page shows a time on the hour: the big hand points to 12 and the little hand points to the hour. The child writes the number the little hand points to.
Reading the hour first, with the big hand always on 12, gives a child one thing to look at. The times on the page include 12, 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 o'clock.
A worked example
The big hand points to 12. The little hand points to 3. What time is it?
- Find the big hand: it points straight up to 12, so it is something o'clock.
- Find the little hand: it points to 3.
- The little hand tells the hour.
- Write 3 in the box: 3 o'clock.
Answer: 3 o'clock
The common mistake
What it looks like: Reading the big hand as the hour and writing 12 for every clock.
Why it happens: The big hand is longer and easier to see, so it gets read first.
How to fix it: Cover the big hand with a finger and read only the little one. Saying "little hand, hour" before each clock helps it stick.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
